Welcome to The Old Bank, Henley-in-Arden
Our pottery studio and gallery can be found in the heart of the Shakespearean market town of Henley-in-Arden, 8-miles from Stratford-upon-Avon and 18-miles from central Birmingham.
The Old Bank occupies the 400 years old former bank building right next to the ancient Market Cross, once the hub of trade and commerce in the town. The light-flooded building offers space for aspiring potters, professional ceramicists, and art lovers to learn, create, and discover.
With 12 potters wheels, 10 hand-building stations, 2 198L Skutt kilns, and a dedicated gallery space, we offer pottery courses and workshops, from one hour to two days, regular exhibitions, and private events by arrangement.
We invite all skill levels — from beginners to experienced makers — looking to advance their pottery practice in a supportive community studio.

We offer many different options for beginner potters. Let's break it down in three.
1. Join a Taster Class
Always wanted to give the wheel a go? Join one of our beginner friendly 60-minute wheel taster or 90-minute family pottery taster classes.
2. Book a Weekend Intensive Course (or Three)
Ready to jump into throwing with two feet? Join us for a weekend intensive course or three! Beginners start the journey with a two-day intensive beginners Wheel Throwing 101: Foundations course. From there, we offer Wheel Throwing 102: Beyond the Cylinder and Wheel Throwing 103: Scaling Up. 15% off when you book any two weekend courses at the same time and 20% when you book all three. The taster was the beginning. This is where you actually learn to throw.
Six hours of instruction spread across two consecutive days, focused on the techniques that underpin almost everything made on the wheel: wedging, centering, opening, and pulling up. The work is repetitive by design. Muscle memory takes time, and there’s no shortcut to it.
You’ll spend a significant portion of the course throwing cylinders — not because they’re the most exciting shape, but because a consistent cylinder is what everything else depends on. On Day 2, you’ll cover turning and trimming: how to refine a form, remove excess clay, and add a foot ring. You’ll be invited to a glazing session four to six weeks later to finish your work at the studio.
Suitable for complete beginners and anyone who wants a proper foundation in throwing.
3. Join Pottery Club
You have the pottery bug, now you need some guided practice. Join like minded potters and expand your skills and creativity quickly in a weekly Pottery Club. We currently have a few spots left in our Tuesday Club where all experience levels are welcome.

Pottery Club is a fun, relaxed, and supportive 2-hour weekly meet-up, held every Tuesday evening from 18:30 to 20:30. It’s designed as a welcoming space where you can unwind, get creative, and enjoy working with clay alongside a like-minded community.
Open to potters at any stage of their journey, Pottery Club offers the perfect balance of independence and support. You’ll have the freedom to explore your own ideas and projects, while still benefiting from light tutor guidance when you need it.
Whether you’re continuing from a recent class, returning to pottery after a break, or simply looking for a regular creative outlet, Pottery Club provides the time, space, and encouragement to grow at your own pace.
4. Join a Workshop
Not all pottery is made on the wheel. Take a more considered approach with one of our handbuilding workshops — project-specific sessions like slab-built jug making, designed to build skill and confidence away from the wheel. See all of our workshops here >>

Slab-building is one of the most versatile techniques in pottery — precise where the wheel is fluid, structural where throwing is centrifugal.
In this 4.5-hour workshop, led by hand-building tutor Ros Ingram, you'll make a functional jug from start to finish using slab methods: shaping, joining, refining.
This workshop is a good follow-up for anyone who attended the hand-building taster class, but the class will accept anyone who wants to learn slab-building techniques, from novice to experienced potter.
